Social Program
CEM’17 social program is conceived to give the participants the taste of Barcelona’s rich cultural, gastronomic, and sports background.

On Wednesday afternoon, we will visit the famous Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, the icon of Catalan modernism. This is a masterwork from the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. As a fervent Christian, Gaudi wanted the construction of this basilica to be funded exclusively by contributions of believers over time. As a consequence, the basilica has been under construction since 1882!

On Friday afternoon, the participants can choose between two options. For those who are fond of sports, the visit to FC Barcelona Stadium and Museum is a must. FC Barcelona (or just Barça for fans) is a top world football club. Among others, they won 5 Champions League titles and 24 Spanish national titles, making them one of the most successful football clubs in history. For those who are fond of arts, we have organized a visit to Joan Miró’s Foundation on the same day. Joan Miró is a famous painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona at the end of the nineteenth century. The Foundation is located at the top of Montjuic, the Barcelona hill where many events, such as athletics and swimming, were organized in 1992 Olympic Games.

The highlight of our social program will be a full-day trip in the Catalan province. We leave early from Barcelona and head to Figueres, where we will visit Dali’s Museum, the home of another great Spanish painter. Later on, we head to the picturesque city of Girona, where participants can enjoy a lunch in one of the many nice restaurants and stroll through the old city center. We will enjoy the awesome Cathedral, which excels as a milestone in the Catalan Gothic architecture, and we will capture the medieval flavor of the intricate streets of the old Jewish quarter (call). In the end, what is Spain without a bit of wine? To get an answer on this, we head from Girona to Empordà region, where the finest Catalan wines are produced. The participants will be able to visit the local winery and vineyards, learn more about wine production, and taste different varieties of the local product.

Workshop Dinner will take place on Thursday evening in a charming seaside restaurant located in Barcelona’s harbor. There, the participants will enjoy the rich Catalan cuisine and will be able to choose from a variety of delicious dishes. A vegetarian option and kids menu will be available. We will contact you later for your food choice. Kindly specify the number of attendees in the attached registration from.

If you are arriving on or before Wednesday, June 21, please join us for the Welcome Breakfast that will take place from 08:30 to 09:00 in the Sala Agora, UPC. This is a good opportunity to meet old and new friends and colleagues. Please note that breakfast and coffee breaks are intended only for the participants.

Please note the following points regarding the social tours:

Fees and payment: The relevant fees for different tours are indicated in the attached registration from. Based on your choices, CEM’17 Secretariat will calculate the total amount and send you an electronic invoice that can be paid with your credit card in US Dollars. This process will be similar to the workshop registration payment made earlier. In case of no show, the tour fee will not be refunded since the payments to vendors are made ahead of time. Please note that the fees for the social events are kept at an absolute minimum and, in some cases, subsidized by the workshop budget.

Meeting times: Participants are kindly requested to arrive in the meeting point at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

Capacity: Please reserve your place as soon as you can since some tours will have limited capacity; first-come, first-served. Last-minute on-site registration for any social event may be possible, but not guaranteed, and may incur higher fees. Depending on the number of participants, some tours may have to be modified. CEM’17 Secretariat will contact the participants if any changes become necessary. On Friday, June 23, there will be two separate tours (Barcelona Stadium + Museum Tour and Miro Foundation + Montjuic Tour); please choose one of them and specify your choice on the registration form.

Some tours may involve walking under the sun. For protection, please bring your sun-block lotions with high SPF, hats, t-shirts, and even umbrellas, if you like.
